Human Resources Assistant

Sweet Briar College seeks an individual to assist with a variety of activities in Human Resources including, verification of employment, preparation of reports, verification and entry of salary and employee data, coordinating tuition remission and Credit Union benefits; processing workers' compensation claims, maintaining OSHA log, responding to employee inquiries, maintaining employee personnel files, job posting and tracking, coordinating special projects and other administrative duties. This is a part-time 20 hours per week position with benefits.

Applicants must have strong computer skills; experience with Excel database and word processing including creating and maintaining spreadsheets. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work with diverse population, excellent customer service and high level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential.

Comparable work experience and high school or equivalency is required. College level course work, experience in human resources and in a higher education environment are desired. Knowledge of Banner is a plus.

Housekeeper/Custodian

The Physical Plant Department at Sweet Briar College seeks applicants for a full-time housekeeper/custodian. This position will be dedicated to one or two buildings of responsibly, performing cleaning of most interior areas. Must be able to work independently and be knowledgeable of cleaning procedures. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally and have a valid VA license. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Sweet Briar College offers an excellent benefit package and has a work schedule from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday - Friday.

Banquet Chef

Purpose of Job:

  • Develop, plan, and coordinate special event menus for events hosted by the College consistent with the strategic focus and image of the College
  • Ensure total adherence to food safety and sanitation guidelines according to ServSafe principles
  • Manage inventory with goal of having all food and food supply products on hand required to properly execute events without excessive inventory costs

Duties:

  • Meets regularly with catering management team to review, plan, and execute catered events.
  • Participates in the planning and establishment of goals and objectives for meetings, conferences and/or events with respects to menus, inventory, staffing, and other related issues.
  • Responsible for ordering all food and food supplies required to properly execute events. Maintain pre-determined food cost parameters.
  • Provide weekly documentation of all food and supply invoices to ensure timely vendor payment and reconciliation of weekly flash report.
  • Responsible for food safety and sanitation of the Florence Elston Inn and Conference Center production/storage areas, and other facilities when used for catered events. Only acceptable sanitation grade is an "A".
  • Plan menus, provide tastings, establish menu recipes and serving standards for all existing, custom event requests and potential menu items. Regularly update and review all catering guide menu items for product availability, menu freshness, and/or price adjustments.
  • Create, maintain and enhance a Sweet Briar College catering recipe file.
  • Ensure maintenance of all kitchen equipment; produce work orders to facilitate needed repairs; advise management of needed upgrades or equipment replacement.
  • Schedules on-call production and professional production staff at appropriate levels for all banquet and catering events.
  • Performs pre-meal conferences before all catered functions to ensure wait staff knows menu.
  • Provides in-service training programs to ensure production staff is knowledgeable in presentation techniques, safety and sanitation, etc.
  • Maintain highest levels of sanitation in all areas of catering services.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years full time work experience in an high volume institutional or hotel/conference center environment. Preference given to candidates with experience in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to individuals and groups with widely varying backgrounds, perspectives, and education.
  • Excellent work record, superior communication, cooperation, and organizational skills also required.
  • Basic working knowledge of Windows-based computer applications (Word, Excel, email).
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to resolve conflict and maintain excellent customer relations.

Minimum Education: Culinary Arts degree or equivalent, with 2 years supervisory experience. Successful candidate will be required to successfully complete ServSafe Manager's certification.

Working Conditions: Considerable time walking, sitting, standing, lifting, bending and kneeling. Work schedule could include up to 50 - 55 hours per week or more as business demands including nights and weekends. Regularly scheduled Monday thru Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours. Time pressures commensurate with event demands. This position is designated as essential personnel.

Director of Media, Marketing and Communications

Reports to: The Vice President/Chief of Staff

Purpose of Job: The Director has a mandate to fully integrate campus image delivery and to increase the currency, impact and efficiency of institutional media, marketing and communication initiatives. The Director will create and lead a comprehensive communications and integrated marketing program that emphasizes Sweet Briar College's unique brand and enhances the visibility of the college.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead integrated marketing initiatives; create image delivery systems and manage communications and marketing in both traditional and digital communications platforms using data-driven decision-making.
  • Manage a six-member professional staff responsible for planning and implementing short and long term marketing and communications strategies that convey the mission of Sweet Briar College nationally and internationally.
  • Oversee the office of media, marketing and communications in staff development, evaluation and budget management.
  • Counsel the president and senior staff on communications and messaging; work collaboratively across campus to efficiently utilize college assets, unify image and support advancement and recruitment goals.
  • Speak as the chief institutional contact for the college. Manage crisis communication and field requests for interviews.
  • Create learning opportunities such as internships for students interested in media, marketing and communications fields.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related field preferred. Demonstrated experience; broad understanding of communications and marketing; and a proven record as a communications/marketing professional.
  • Demonstrated experience with digital technologies for marketing and communications.
  • Be an accomplished communications/marketing professional of integrity, sound judgment, considerable energy with a commitment to collaborative work, a passion for higher education and the ability to support and inspire colleagues.

Sweet Briar College seeks part time production staff (cooks, prep cooks) to work varying hours for catered functions. Must be available to work evenings and weekends and able to lift 50 lbs. Applicants must be service oriented, reliable and work effectively with others as part of a team. Previous food service experience preferred. Hourly pay rate per hour based on experience.
